Desktop app

The Tyrum desktop app is the Electron app for running Tyrum on your machine.

Install

Desktop installers are published on GitHub Releases (see the Installation Guide). Download the installer for your OS:

  • macOS: .dmg (or .zip)
  • Windows: .exe
  • Linux: .AppImage (or .tar.gz)

If you want to verify downloads, each release includes SHA256SUMS.

First run

On launch, open the Connection page and choose one of these modes:

Embedded

Start an embedded gateway managed by the desktop app.

  1. Keep the default port (8788) or pick a free port.
  2. Click Start Gateway.

Embedded mode stores its saved gateway token in the desktop config and recovers it automatically if that saved value is missing or can no longer be decrypted. If the gateway is provisioned with GATEWAY_TOKEN or TYRUM_GATEWAY_TOKEN, the desktop app reuses and persists that token for later embedded reconnects.

When the desktop app is connected, it maintains two gateway connections on this machine:

  • an operator client connection for the UI
  • a separate local node connection for desktop-local capabilities

Background mode

Embedded mode can optionally keep Tyrum available in the background:

  • Open Connection → Embedded and enable Background mode.
  • Tyrum adds a tray/menu-bar icon and starts at login in a hidden state.
  • Closing the main window hides it instead of quitting, so the embedded gateway keeps running.
  • Use the tray/menu-bar menu to reopen Tyrum, jump back to Connection, start or stop the gateway, or quit the app completely.

Notes:

  • Background mode is only active while Embedded mode is selected.
  • If you switch to Remote, Tyrum keeps the preference but disables launch-at-login until you switch back to Embedded.
  • Explicitly quitting Tyrum still shuts down the embedded gateway and desktop-local resources.
  • Linux background mode requires a working system tray/status notifier and writes an XDG autostart entry under ~/.config/autostart/ (or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/autostart/).

Remote

Connect the desktop app to an existing gateway.

  1. Set Gateway WebSocket URL (must include /ws).
  2. Enter your admin token (see the Getting Started guide).
  3. Optionally set TLS certificate fingerprint (SHA-256) when connecting over TLS with a trusted remote certificate (see Remote Gateway Guide).
  4. Click Connect.

Remote mode still keeps the same split locally: the UI connects as an operator client, and the desktop runtime connects separately as a node for local capabilities.

After the desktop app connects, Tyrum opens a guided setup wizard by default when the gateway still needs first-run configuration. You can skip that post-connect flow and configure the gateway manually from the normal dashboard, configure, and agents pages, then reopen the wizard later from the dashboard if you want to use it.

Troubleshooting

Connection issues

  • Confirm the gateway is reachable from your machine (host/port/firewalls).
  • Confirm the WebSocket URL includes /ws.
  • Remote mode: if you changed GATEWAY_TOKEN, update the token used by the desktop app.
  • Embedded mode: restarting the embedded gateway recovers a missing saved token automatically; you should not need to delete the embedded gateway database just to regain access.

macOS permissions

Some desktop capabilities require macOS permissions:

  • Accessibility
  • Screen Recording

Use Diagnostics to check and request missing permissions. If Screen Recording is missing, desktop screenshot tasks now fail with an explicit tool error instead of crashing Tyrum. After granting access, restart the app.

Updates

The desktop app can check for updates and install downloaded releases from the Diagnostics page. If needed, you can also install from a local release file via Diagnostics → Use Local Release File.

Resetting configuration

Desktop configuration is stored at ~/.tyrum/desktop-node.json (or $TYRUM_HOME/desktop-node.json). If the app is in a bad state, you can stop the app and remove that file to reset to defaults.
